Managing Medications in Aboriginal Substance Misuse Services
Accreditation Canada's Managing Medications Standards address the safe use and effective management of medication, and are to be used by organizations with or without an on-site pharmacy.
The Managing Medications Standards for Aboriginal Substance Misuse Services emphasize aspects of medication use specific to those services: security and storage, including the storage and handling of pharmaceutical treatments; the safe administration of medications; and aspects related to educating, monitoring, and protecting clients from adverse drug events.
Some of the following standards and criteria were adopted with permission from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) and ISMP Canada, based on the ISMP Medication Safety Self-Assessments ® - Canadian Versions. (www.ismp-canada.org/index.htm <http://www.ismp-canada.org/index.htm>).
The standards are divided into four sections:
- Working together to promote medication safety
- Educating staff, clients, and families about safe medication use
- Safely administering medications to clients
- Monitoring quality and achieving positive outcomes
